Intro to the Between
The Between, is a place between places. It is icy cold, a cold that seeps into the very bones of whoever is travelling through it, it removes sensation, you cannot feel even the tips of your fingers in the Between.
Dragons, Whers, and Firelizards use Between, as they go from place to place, like one might teleport.
How it works
The subject (dragon/wher/flitter) must have a crystal clear picture visualised in it’s mind as to where it is going. This destination can be shared with other subjects through mental speech. With this in mind, the dragon will take to the Between.
Three extended heartbeats are spent within this void. Lacking in warmth, in sensation, anything outside of the body is lost, a Rider will not feel the Dragon beneath them.
If a dragon is unclear as to its destination, it is likely that the dragon will get lost Between. It can be a frequent cause of death in Weyrlings.
The Between, is considered the pathway to death. Beyond the Between is the place where the dead go. When a Rider dies, it is common for a Dragon to go between with no exact destination, considered suicide.
The between is also fatal for any conception. It terminates whatever pregnancy occurs, it is a frequent method of abortion for Dragon riders.
The extreme cold of the Between also irradicates any Thread that a Dragon comes in contact with.
The Between is a destination between destinations. However – not only is it for physical destinations, however, it is also possible to not just travel between place and place, but time and time also. Like regular going Between, one must have a brilliant image of the destination, a reference that is a vivid memory, or knowledge of the star positions.
However, ‘timing it’ as it’s known, is a secret kept quiet amongst the Weyrs, it is not something they encourage people to do, and temptation is an awful thing.
